I've gotten questions asking how to shade so here's one way. It's short but it should get the idea across.

I don't really do any digital artwork, however I do sometimes fix my photos with GIMP to make them look like the actual painting.
My husband is doing a very simple linear comic, do you have by chance a tutorial about those little "balloons" with text for the dialogs?? (if you don't, please don't bother to do one ok? just asking)

I can't find a tutorial for doing the balloons in GIMP, but your husband's best bet might be to find some premade stock word balloons here on dA or somewhere else on the Net and just stretch or skew them to change how they look. That would probably be easiest anyway.
